Acknowledgement of Country – long text description

Acknowledgement of Country is a large rectangular painting in Aboriginal dot style constructed from 32 separate panels in a 4 by 8 layout. It features various multicoloured circular and asymmetrical shapes made of concentric lines against a background of complex dot patterns.

In the foreground, 12 circular shapes (some cut off at the edges) are equidistantly spaced across the painting and connected to each other by larger asymmetrical shapes. The concentric lines that make up each shape are drawn in black, with the spaces in between coloured differently to maximise contrast. Most of the colours are warm, consisting of yellow, orange, brown, pink and red, with blue, purple and green used in a few spots.

The shapes sit against a background of complex but repetitive dot patterns. Each background section between the shapes starts with a black dot in the centre, followed by concentric circles of dots spreading out from the centre, where some circles are made of small dots, and some circles are made of large dots. The black dots sit against a light-coloured background in varying warm hues of cream, yellow, orange, brown, pink and red, with blue and purple used in a couple of spots.
