State Choir

As part of the Department's ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been necessary to cancel the State Choir for 2020 to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of students, staff, families and audiences. For more information about COVID-19 and New South Wales public schools go to

The State Choir program provides an opportunity for 80 dedicated and talented choristers from across New South Wales to sing challenging repertoire with some of Australia’s leading choral directors. The choir is open to all government school students Years 8-12 and are a combination of male and female voices. No audition is required.

Music is sent to students to prepare before the first rehearsal. The choir meets to rehearse in Sydney before performing on the concert hall stage of the Sydney Opera House as part of the Festival of Choral Music.
