>> Back to video

The Secondary Aboriginal Dance Program is a series of one day workshops run by the NSW Department of Education and The Arts Unit in collaboration with the internationally renowned Bangarra Dance Theatre.

The workshop is available for students from Year 7 - 12 who identify as Aboriginal and who attend a NSW Public School. It is suitable for both experienced and inexperienced dancers. Teachers can apply to bring groups or individual students who have an interest in learning and connecting to culture.

During the workshop, students will learn a range of dance and movement skills which draw on traditional and contemporary elements of cultural significance. Teachers attending the workshop can also be accredited with 4 hours of Teacher Identified Professional Learning for standards 1.4, 4.1 and 6.3.

Following the workshop, identified students will be offered the opportunity to be considered for the NSW Public Schools Aboriginal Dance Company.

We are very proud that students from this ensemble have gone on to perform and participate in some of Australias leading Indigenous arts organisations and companies.

Teachers can apply online at The Arts Unit website on the Secondary Aboriginal Dance workshops page. Confirmation of acceptance is sent to teachers once all of the required permissions are received from the school.

The Secondary Aboriginal Dance workshops run during term 1 at a series of venues across the state. Check the Arts Unit website to find a venue and a workshop near you. If your school is interested in hosting a workshop please contact one of the Arts Initiatives team. Looking forward to seeing you there.
