State Wind Bands

As part of the Department's ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been necessary to cancel the State Wind Band for 2020 to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of students, staff, families and audiences. For more information about COVID-19 and New South Wales public schools go to

The State Wind Bands provide an opportunity for talented music students in NSW Public Schools to perform in a state ensemble under the direction of professional conductors. State Bands perform repertoire chosen to challenge and extend students' musical skills. Up to 60 students from across New South Wales will be selected for each ensemble.

State Senior Band 2018

Two symphonic wind bands will be formed:          

  • Senior State Wind Band for Years 8 – 12 students.
    A minimum of AMEB Grade 6 or equivalent required.
  • Junior State Wind Band for Years 5 – 8 students.
    A minimum of AMEB Grade 4 or equivalent required.

Senior State Wind Band Dates

Rehearsals - 15 & 16 August 2020 at The Arts Unit, Lewisham

Performances - 17 & 18 August 2020 at Sydney Town Hall

Junior State Wind Band Dates

Rehearsals - 22 & 23 August 2020 at The Arts Unit, Lewisham

Performances - 24 & 25 August 2020 at Sydney Town Hall

Successful applicants will commit to: 2 rehearsal days in Sydney, plus 2 rehearsals and performances at the Sydney Town Hall as part of the Department of Education Festival of Instrumental Music.

Once an applicant is accepted, participation in all sessions is mandatory and no variation to this schedule is possible. Please be sure that your child is able to commit to the full program before applying.

Cost for 2020 (payment not required until selections are made)

  • Student participation fee - $110
  • Students from rural & remote schools- $32.50


As part of The Arts Unit's support of the Department of Education Rural and Remote Education blueprint for action, we have provided a 25% discount on participation fees as well as a $50.00 travel subsidy to students from rural and remote schools to attend the State Band.

Notification to successful applicants 22 May 2020
Music distributed by 12 June 2020

Students will organise their own travel to and from rehearsals and performances.

Students will be supervised by DoE teachers during rehearsals and performances.
