Applications for 2018 will open in February
The State Wind Band ensembles provide an opportunity for talented students in NSW Public Schools to perform in a state ensemble under the direction of professional conductors to perform a repertoire which challenges their musical skills.
Two symphonic wind bands will be formed:
- Senior State Wind Band for Years 8 – 12 students
- Junior State Wind Band for Years 5 – 8 students
Between 55 and 65 students from across New South Wales will be selected for each ensemble. Students are provided with the music to practice before attending two days of rehearsals in Sydney. Each year the bands perform at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Festival of Instrumental Music.
Junior Ensemble: Students should be a minimum of AMEB Grade 4 (or equivalent)
Senior Ensemble: Students should be a minimum of AMEB Grade 6 (or equivalent)
Dates for 2018:
23 March 2018 - Closing Date for applications
6 April 2018 - Notification will be sent to applicants via email
13 April 2018 - Deadline for acceptance of position
15 April 2018 - Junior Wind Band music will be sent out via Dropbox link
1 May 2018 - Senior Wind Band music will be sent out via Dropbox link
Successful applicants will commit to:
Senior Students (Year 8-12):
15 & 16 June 2018 - Rehearsals in Sydney (all day)
17 & 18 June 2018 - Rehearsal & Performances at the Sydney Opera House
Junior Students (Year 5 - 8):
18 & 19 May 2018 - Rehearsals in Sydney (all day)
20 & 21 May 2018 - Rehearsals & Performances at the Sydney Opera House
Participation is mandatory in all sessions. There will be no variation to this schedule. Please do not apply if you are unable to commit to the above schedule.
Cost for 2018: (Invoice to be paid upon acceptance of a successful application)
Metropolitan Students - $100
Non Metropolitan Students - $75
Rural & Remote Students - $35 (includes subsidy)
As part of The Arts Unit's support of the Department of Education and Communities' Rural and Remote Education blueprint for action, we are excited to be able to offer a Participation Subsidy of $40 to students from rural and remote schools to attend the State Band.
Please note: If interest exceeds available funds, allocation of the Participation Subsidy will be prioritised based on remoteness. Subsidies will be confirmed with acceptance notification.
Accommodation (for non-metropolitan students)
Billeting can be organised for Non-Metropolitan students if required. Metropolitan students who are able to host a country student will receive a financial subsidy.
Students will organise their own travel to and from rehearsals and performances.
Students will be supervised by DoE teachers during rehearsals and performances.
